This video is the result of the collective transdisciplinary work carried out by the team of researchers of project ‘Decante: wine as Évora’s transdisciplinary heritage’ during the first IN2PAST Doctoral School, the ‘In2Future Boot Camp: Towards an Ecology of Heritage Practices’, held in Évora between May 18 and 24, 2024, in partnership with Festival Imaterial and Évora 27 – European Capital of Culture, and which brought together 33 PhD students from the seven research units that make up the IN2PAST consortium.
Adressing ‘wine’ as a heritage element in Évora, from the point of view of Archaeology, Architecture, Heritage, Landscape, Musical Iconography, Museology, and History and Philosophy of Science, recovering different identities associated with it, was the choice of these five researchers to respond to the challenge of (re)thinking techniques and devices of archiving, or of cultural transmission, which constitute heritage, an idea underlying the notion of anarchive.
The project was developed from scratch in less than a week, more specifically, “in eleven and a half hours”, say the authors of project ‘Decante’, who looked for, and found, a wine in archaeological heritage, at the Frei Manuel do Cenáculo National Museum; a wine that transformed social reality between the 19th and 20th centuries; a wine represented in the ‘Cante Alentejano’, a deeply identitarian musical expression; a wine that marks the rural landscape with its specific agricultural buildings.
‘The result of this disciplinary intersection is a proposal to rethink wine as a potential community heritage practice in Évora, which we try to materialise in this video.’
