S. João de Calvos

The Romanesque-style rural church of Portugal: An initial stride towards the complete digitalization by Heritage-BIM

The case study of S. João de Calvos (Guimarães, 13th Century AD)

Summary

Romanesque-style buildings in Portugal first developed in the Minho and Douro regions where most of them are concentrated. Less famous than the great cathedrals of the major Portuguese cities, the rural Romanesque churches in Portugal represent true architectural jewels and a well-preserved part of the historical-artistic heritage of Portugal. Its conservation status is linked to construction technical skills and especially the use of resistant building stones.

Today, the safeguarding, conservation and fruition of these buildings are possible through Heritage-BIM (Building Information Modelling) tools). This project presents a pilot case study focused on H-BIM digitalization of the rural Romanesque-style church of S. João de Calvos (Guimarães, 13th century).

The intention is to produce a detailed 3D digital model (indoor and outdoor) online-available and capable of integrating geometric and non-geometric dataset of information including: i) historical, archaeological and archaeometric data for educational, awareness-raising tourism fruition purposes, ii) current state of building involving: pathologies, materials decay, data about previous restoration and ordinary/extraordinary maintenance.
