The 5th National Meeting of IN2PAST Researchers, taking place in the region of Minho between January 22nd and the 25th, 2025, will bring together around 170 of the associate laboratory’s researchers and collaborators from other research centres to debate scientific knowledge and practices at the intersection of Heritage, Arts, Sustainability and Territory.
The Meeting is kicked off on January 22nd with a public session hosted by the Rectory of the University of Minho, in Braga, welcoming representatives of leading regional and national institutions in the fields of Heritage, Arts and Culture.
On Thursday and Friday, January 23rd and 24th, the researchers will gather at the University of Minho’s Gualtar campus for the 5th National Meeting’s debate sessions (see programme below). The event ends on Saturday January 25th, with IN2PAST’s 3rd Field Trip: the destination is the village of Extremo, in Arcos de Valdevez, a living communal laboratory where researchers and the local community come together to study the landscape and promote the sustainability of this area’s heritage.
IN2PAST’s National Meetings aim to promote the intersection of different scientific knowledge and the dialogue between practices of preservation, knowledge and configuration of the past, providing a forum of reference and excellence for sharing the research carried out within the framework of the Associate Laboratory’s five thematic lines.
They are also a privileged space for building new forms of research and innovation, as well as for boosting knowledge and collaborations between the researchers who make up IN2PAST, from its seven research units (RUs).

The focus of the session is on issues of cultural heritage conservation in its multiple scales and incidences, from the landscape to the artefact. Intervention modes are discussed, identifying good practices and their potential for replication in response to contemporary challenges.

11:30 am – 1 pm | Debate session 2: Recognise
The session focuses on the study of cultural heritage by rescuing, recording and recognising spaces and collections in their artistic, technical and authorial qualities. Methodologies for analysing and valuing are debated, bridging gaps in knowledge and reviewing established narratives.

3 – 4:30 pm | Debate session 3: Disciplinary intersections
The session explores methodologies and possibilities for converging disciplinary fields to instigate holistic approaches. Challenges and benefits of disciplinary intersections in the formulation of public policies in the fields of cultural heritage, the arts and civic memory are identified, based on a relational vision of spaces, objects and narratives.

5 – 6.30 pm | Debate session 4: Technologies
From the different laboratory and experimental domains brought together in IN2PAST, we question the incorporation of new technical and digital processes, including artificial intelligence, in preservation, recording, creation and dissemination, discussing open opportunities and the need to critically review current protocols and methodologies.

The session focuses on research practices that simultaneously mobilise materialities, times, memories and communities/individuals, crossing reflections on the past and its reverberations in the present-future. A look that brings together artefacts and technologies of different natures and scales.

2:30 – 4 pm | Debate session 6: Collaborative practices
The session reflects on contemporary research, dissemination and extension practices that emphasise the diversity of knowledge agents. It discusses interactions between formal and informal practices, scientific and social activism, in a complex process of mediation and sharing between subjects.
