InDigit was represented at IN2PAST’s 5th National Meeting of Researchers, taking place in the region of Minho, Portugal, between January 22nd and the 25th, 2025, with a scientific poster outlining the context, objectives and planned tasks of this exploratory project, as well as the proposed case study: the development of a prototype digital repository in collaboration with co-researchers from the Kamayurá indigenous people (Upper Xingu, Brazil), based on their collection located in Lisbon, at the National Museum of Ethnology.
The visual elements chosen for the poster reflect the decision not to use images of or from the collection since one of the aspects the project is trying to determine is whether, according to the Kamayurá, these images can be disseminated, and if so, which ones and in what context.
Among other considerations, the authors point out that ‘the digitisation of indigenous peoples’ collections raises specific epistemological, ethical and political issues that must be analysed in collaboration with the with the communities of origin’. The team also sees the digital transition as ‘an opportunity to build the digital sphere through a plurality of perspectives by means of the collaborative development of repositories with indigenous communities’.
