IN2PAST is dedicated to the study, dissemination and valorisation of tangible and intangible Cultural Heritage, Arts and Collective Memory, and their intersections with the themes of Sustainability and Territory, generating intensive collaborative relations between: 1) academic, laboratory-based, theoretical, and empirical research; 2) public policies concerning the domains of cultural heritage, arts, and civic memory; 3) an important set of cultural institutions and facilities, monuments, museums, archives, archaeological sites, and natural parks, among many others.
IN2PAST develops its activity along five Thematic Lines (TLs)
TL1 – Science and Technology for Cultural Heritage
Committed to the preservation and valorisation of cultural heritage via integrated strategies, paying particular attention to: preventive conservation, conservation-restoration and risk assessment strategies for the sustainable use of cultural heritage; revitalisation of craft heritage and traditional methods through innovative processes, and novel materials or uses; physical supports for intangible cultural heritage.
TL2 – Landscape, Territories and Cultural Heritage
Dedicated to analysing, understanding, interpreting and enhancing the urban, natural and rural territories and their ecological and cultural landmarks as heritage resources that can foster economic and social development, within a strategy of heritage enhancement, particularly of cultural landscapes and territory, and innovation for sustainable development.
TL3 – Museums, Monuments and Their Collections
To address the challenges of collections reassessments and new displays of culture emerging from digital transformation, touristification, and international crises and conflicts, through collaborative and interdisciplinary initiatives with respect to issues of cultural diversity, artistic practice, ethics, sustainability, and intellectual property, while countering territorial and social asymmetries.
TL4 – Archives, from Preventive Preservation to Digitalization
This TL addresses pressing concerns about memory institutions (and the objects, physical or digital, they collect and itemise, broadly understood as archives), stemming from transverse problems raised by preservation (including the crucial selection of memory objects, digitisation, conservation, preventive conservation, and restoration), sustainability, funding, trusteeship, and access, to advise on criteria for public policies and ethics in this area.
TL5 – Cultural Transfers, Public Policies on Memory and Inclusive Citizenship
TL5 focuses on three major areas: 1) Promoting critical forms of historical commemoration, integrating inclusive citizenship in the memorialization of violent pasts; 2) Translating this inclusive citizenship into the making of diasporic archives for more pluralistic transnational memories; 3) Inserting Portuguese state policies in international debates on difficult memories (including the memory of fascism, the memories of colonial violence and anti-colonial struggles).

Prospective applicants should submit their research plan bearing in mind IN2PAST’s five TLs of research, as well as the conditions set forth in the Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus programme.
