Five of the seven research units (RUs) that make up the IN2PAST – Associate Laboratory consortium received a rating of Excellent and two of Very Good in the provisional results of the 2023/2024 evaluation of RUs under the multi-annual funding programme managed by the Portuguese funding agency Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia – FCT .
The Centre for Research in Anthropology (CRIA), the Institute of Art History (IHA), the Institute of Contemporary History (IHC), HERCULES Laboratory – Cultural Heritage Studies and Safeguard, and the Landscapes, Heritage and Territory Laboratory (Lab2PT) were evaluated as Excellent (top rating). The Centre for the Study of the Sociology and Aesthetics of Music (CESEM) and the Centre for Art History and Artistic Research (CHAIA) were evaluated as Very Good (second top rating).
The evaluation focused on the scientific and technological activities carried out by the RUs between January 1st, 2018 and December 31st, 2023, and on the objectives, strategy, activity plan and organization for the period from
2025 to 2029. RUs are periodically evaluated and awarded a rating that determines funding for the following multi-annual period.
RUs with an Excellent or Very Good rating total an approved funding of 609.8 million euros for the period of 2025 to 2029, 110 million euros of which comes from the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan (Plano de Recuperação e Resiliência, or PRR), part of the European Commission extraordinary funding package for economic and social recovery, with an implementation deadline in June 30, 2026.
The complex, long and demanding evaluation process, both for FCT and the RUs, lasted more than one year, involving more than 1,300 remote interviews and 29 weeks of face-to-face visits, according to the FCT’s statement, some of which happened already in 2025. This was the first evaluation carried out under the terms of Regulation 1251-A/2023.
