Summary

In this exploratory project, we look at the Wardian case as an example of an anthropocenic artefact, a scientific heritage object known for having accelerated processes of intercontinental plant circulation during the 19th century. The research as a whole will allow us to have a better understanding of the trajectory of this type of portable greenhouses in Portugal. What name would they have in the Portuguese context? What models were used? Were they replicas of English or German models? Why don’t we know more about its history in Portugal? Are there examples in Portuguese institutions or private collections?

The goal of this project is to deepen our knowledge about the impact of this anthropocenic artefact on the forms and routes of intercontinental plant circulation, on the knowledge associated with them, on international scientific relations and cultural/social habits in Portugal. The results of this research will be promoted through knowledge transfer in schools and scientific publications.
