The colloquium ‘Retratos de Abril do Cartoonista António’ (‘Portraits of April by Cartoonist António’) takes place on May 6th, at the National Museum of Ancient Art (MNAA, Portuguese acronym), in Lisbon. It is directed at History and Art History teachers, University students, journalists and other members of the public interested in History, Art History, Caricature and Humor, and is accredited by the Associação de Professores de História (APH).

Inspired by the famous panels of St. Vincent, by Nuno Gonçalves, at the National Museum of Ancient Art, António’s caricatures (b. 1953) depict Portuguese society in the post-PREC period. Each of the painted characters represents a political figure who played a prominent role in the turbulent period following the April 25th revolution in Portugal. (PREC stands for Processo Revolucionário Em Curso, or ‘Ongoing Revolutionary Process’).

This colloquium aims to critically address and debate not only the life and graphic work of cartoonist António but also to contribute to a deeper understanding of this set of caricatures through a biographical and symbolic analysis of each of the portrayed characters. Check out the full programme here.

The initiative is part of the exploratory project ‘Portraits of April by the cartoonist António’, funded by the Institute of Art History –NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST under strategic project UIDB/00417/2020.

To register, please send an email to secretariado@aph.pt. Registration is €20 for members of APH and €25 for other audiences, and includes lunch at the musem’s restaurant.
