Music is an object of research around which IN2PAST brings together knowledge from different disciplinary backgrounds, including musicology, sociology, history and anthropology. Issues regarding the safeguarding of artistic heritage also have a very important place in the laboratory work we carry out in terms of conservation, restoration and digitisation.
IN2PAST’s 2nd Field Trip is dedicated to music. It starts in the evening of December 12th, at 6 pm, in a historic place for Lisbon’s associative and cooperative life, A Padaria do Povo, where we will listen to nine songs with commentary by nine IN2PAST researchers. The song that lends its title to our meeting, Qual é a tua, ó meu?, is a well-known composition by Portuguese singer-songwriter José Mário Branco, echoing Lisbon’s neighbourhoods with the ‘marcha popular’ genre (‘people’s march’). The other eight songs have different authors, histories and genres, allowing us to explore the relationship between the sounds and the territories in which they were produced or which they are concerned with.
This guided music listening session with commentary is followed by a dinner, served at 8:30 pm at Padaria do Povo. On Friday December 13th, at 11 am, we are visiting the José Mário Branco Research and Documentation Centre – Music and Freedom (Centro de Estudos e Documentação José Mário Branco – Música e Liberdade, or CEDJMB-ML), where CESEM / IN2PAST and INET-md care for and study the José Mário Branco collection entrusted to NOVA FCSH. This tour will be guided by Manuel Pedro Ferreira and Patrícia Lopes (CESEM – NOVA FCSH), and Ricardo Andrade and Hugo Castro, from INET-md.
Confirmed for this 2nd Field Trip are IN2PAST researchers Filipa Magalhães (CESEM – NOVA FCSH), Júlia Durand (CESEM – NOVA FCSH), João Mineiro (CRIA – Iscte), Manuel Pedro Ferreira (CESEM – NOVA FCSH), Pedro Moreira (CESEM – Universidade de Évora), Rui Cidra (IHC – NOVA FCSH), Vanda de Sá (CESEM – UÉvora) and Zuelma Chaves (CESEM – NOVA FCSH), with only the ninth participant still to be announced.

The 2nd IN2PAST Field Trip is open to all PhD researchers (‘integrados’) and PhD students (‘integrados’ or with a doctoral work plan hosted by the respective research unit – RU), and technicians affiliated with one of the seven RUs that make up the associate laboratory – CESEM, CHAIA, CRIA, HERCULES, IHC, IHA and Lab2PT.
Interested parties should register by filling in and submitting this form by October 25th so that the management teams of the RUs/Management Institutions (MI) can process travel arrangements. Places are limited to room capacity at A Padaria do Povo and José Mário Branco Archive.
IN2PAST will pay for travel (by public transport, with arrival on December 12th and departure on December 13th) and one (1) night’s accommodation in Lisbon (December 12th) for its PhD researchers, PhD students and technicians affiliated with the Universities of Évora, Coimbra and Minho, who take part in the activities of the two-day Field Trip. Booking of travel and accommodation must be requested by each participant from the management team of their respective RU/MI.
