Initiated during IN2PAST’s Boot Camp 2024

Project ‘O Património é Teu!’ sparks interest at EPoCH 2025

With a reflection on AI application and its ethical challenges

1/4/2025

‘It was an excellent platform to showcase the work we have been doing,’ says researcher José Caetano (IHC – Universidade de Évora / IN2PAST) about the participation of the ‘O Património é Teu!’ project team last week in EPoCH 2025.

‘It was essentially an opportunity to share some of the reflections that have been emerging in our project, particularly with regard to the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and the ethical challenges which arise from this,’ explains José, who delivered a communication entitled ‘Heritage in a Digital World: AI & Ethical Challenges in the “O Património é Teu!” Project’, representing a team that also includes António Carrapiço (HERCULES – University of Évora / IN2PAST), Joana Camacho (CRIA – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST), and Teresa Lança Ruivo (IHC – UÉvora / IN2PAST).

Project ‘O Património é Teu!’ (‘Heritage is Yours!’) was initiated last year during IN2PAST’s first Doctoral School and it proposes an app for the public participation in heritage conservation and monitoring, At the EPoCH 2025 conference, which took place in Porto, Portugal, from March 27th to the 29th, the project sparked interest, ‘particularly because of the way we tried to articulate the different areas of knowledge in the team around our objective: to think about (and implement) heritage intervention that uses data science and artificial intelligence in a responsible way,’ says José.

The presentation also captured the attention of participants interested in better understanding the operationalisation of the chosen approach, and in a possible adoption of the methodology developed for the exploration of data sets, with a possible collaboration to be explored soon.
