Kept by the Archaeological Museum of Old Goa/Velha Goa, India, the portrait gallery of the Viceroys of the State of India is a unique collection in the context of shared heritage. An international and multidisciplinary team of researchers is studying and interpreting it, towards its safeguarding and valorisation, the four main goals of exploratory project ‘Old Goa Revelations – new insights on the viceroys portrait gallery’ (DOI 10.54499/2022.10305.PTDC).

‘This project aims to decipher all the layers that have accumulated in these portraits,’ explains researcher Fernando António Baptista Pereira (CIEBA, FBAUL).

Coordinated by HERCULES Laboratory – University of Évora / IN2PAST, the Archaeological Service of India (Ministry of Culture, Government of India) and CIEBA – Centre for Research and Studies in Fine Arts (Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon), ‘Old Goa Revelations is an  international collaborative project, unique and demonstrative of what good practices for the conservation and interpretation of shared heritage can be,’ emphasises HERCULES – UÉvora / IN2PAST researcher Teresa Teves Reis.

Funded by the portuguese public agency Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. and with the support of Fundação Oriente, the project has the scientific collaboration of the José de Figueiredo Laboratory (Museus e Monumentos de Portugal) and the University of Ghent, Belgium, and the participation of the Goan company Lemon Tart Media.
