IN2PAST – Associate Laboratory shall welcome at least three new PhD Studentship holders under the 2024 Call for PhD Studentships – Specific Line of Application in a Non-academic Environment (BDANA), of which the prelimlinary results were announced by the Portuguese funding agency Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) at the beginning of August: Maria Figueira (IHC – University of Évora / IN2PAST), Emanuela Constância Boccia (CHAIA – UÉvora / IN2PAST) and Manuel Carapito da Conceição (IHC – UÉvora / IN2PAST).

With a project entitled ‘Exhibitions, colonial collections and their (in)visibilities (1884-1940). Construction and dissemination of knowledge in Portuguese museums: a comparative and transnational perspective’ (‘Exposições, coleções coloniais e suas (in)visibilidades (1884-1940). Construção e disseminação de conhecimentos em museus portugueses: uma perspetiva comparativa e transnacional’), Maria Figueira attends the doctoral programme in History and Philosophy of Science, specialisation in Museology at the University of Évora and is supervised at IN2PAST by IHC – UÉvora researcher Elisabete Pereira.

Maria’s project is being hosted by the Santos Rocha Municipal Museum, in Figueira da Foz, Portugal, and the Pitt Rivers Museum, at the University of Oxford, UK, under the supervision, respectively, of museum director Manuela Silva and project researcher Lennon Mhishi. Find out more.

‘The Gesture-Pause: Tapestry as Resistance to Visual Ephemerality in Contemporary Society’ (‘O Gesto-Pausa: A Tapeçaria como Resistência à Efemeridade Visual na Sociedade Contemporânea’) is the title of Emanuela Constância Boccia‘s project, supervised by our researcher Teresa Veiga Furtado (CHAIA – UÉvora / IN2PAST) and Pedro Pousada, director of the College of Arts at the University of Coimbra and co-coordinator of its PhD programme in Contemporary Arts. Emanuela’s non-academic supervisor is Rui Miguel Lobo, director of the Arraiolos Tapestry Interpretation Centre, in Arraiolos, Alentejo, Portugal, where the CHAIA – UÉvora / IN2PAST PhD researcher will also develop her work. Also worthy of the FCT funding is Manuel Carapito da Conceição‘s project, ‘The political elites of Covilhã (1910 to 1974): a social analysis’ (‘As elites políticas covilhanenses (1910 a 1974): uma análise social’). Supervised by Maria de Fátima Nunes (IHC – UÉvora / IN2PAST), the doctoral student in History, specialising in Contemporary History at UÉvora has the Municipal Archive of Covilhã and the Archive of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia at Covilhã, both in the Portuguese city of the same name, as non-academic hosting institutions.
