Composer and CESEM – ESML-IPL / IN2PAST researcher Luís Tinoco is the 2024 Pessoa Prize winner. Awarded by newspaper Expresso and Caixa Geral de Depósitos, Prémio Pessoa aims to highlight the Portuguese personality who, each year, stands out in the country’s artistic, cultural or scientific life.
In 38 editions, this is only the third time the award goes to a musician. And it has been 24 years since Emanuel Nunes was honoured, in 2000, after Maria João Pires, in 1989.
Luís Tinoco, who receives a record 70 thousand euros, is a member of CESEM’s Contemporary Music Research Group, he lectures at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (ESML-IPL) and he is a renowned producer of new music radio programmes for Antena 2 / RTP.

‘We need to educate young people to like music that is not for immediate consumption’, Luís Tinoco says in an interview by journalist Christiana Martins, which you can read here.
