The photograph you see here on the right earned João Vinícius Chiesa Back, a master’s student in Archaeology at the University of Minho, the title of ‘TEA Photojournalist of the Year 2025’, awarded by the European Association of Archaeologists. João Vinícius Back is supervised by researchers Ana Bettencourt (Lab2PT – University of Minho / IN2PAST) and César Oliveira (HERCULES – University of Évora / IN2PAST), in a close collaboration between two of the different research and development units (UID) which make up the consortium IN2PAST – Associate Laboratory.
The winning image was developed using photogrammetry and 3D modelling to simulate a possible use of a vase with a wide horizontal rim, which is at the D. Diogo Sousa Museum of Archaeology, in a Bronze Age funerary context located in the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula. The subject of João’s master’s degree is particularly relevant to the archaeology of the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula, as it combines archaeological studies with the use of analytical techniques, such as chromatography, to investigate the nature of the organic residues often found in these Bronze Age vases.
João Vinícius Back is also a researcher in the Cultur-Monts project, funded by the Interreg SUDOE 2021-2027 Programme, coordinated in Portugal by Lab2PT – University of Minho / IN2PAST researcher Helena Paula Abreu de Carvalho and with the participation of Rebeca Blanco-Rotea and Paulo Bernardes, also from Lab2PT.
The theme of the ‘TEA Photojournalist of the Year 2025’ was ‘Archaeology, Art or Science’. TEA is the acronym of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA) newsletter The European Archaeologist and the image of the young Portuguese researcher will be on the cover of one of the next editions. The title of photojournalist of the year 2025, shared with researchers Heide Wrobel Nørgaard (Moesgård Museum and Aarhus University, Denmark) and Nicolas Vanderesse (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France), also grants the recipients a year’s membership of the EAA.
