Arturo Zoffmann Rodriguez, IHC – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST researcher, has received a Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) to begin an ambitious five-year comparative history project about the impact of states of exception on European democracies at the beginning of the 20th century.
At the beginning of the last century, faced with pressure on democratic regimes and challenges to state authority (such as during the Great War), many countries suspended their constitutional rules through states of exception and powers of emergency. Were these legal instruments a factor in the emergence of the European dictatorships of the 20th century? This is the question Arturo sets out to answer with the project ‘The constitutional road to dictatorships: states of exception and authoritarianism in Europe between 1900 and 1939’
(‘O caminho constitucional para as ditaduras: estados de excepção e autoritarismo na Europa entre 1900 e 1939’ (STEXEU), which will analyse and compare the history of eight European countries: Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Czechoslovakia, France, Great Britain and Greece.
Arturo’s project will receive 1.5 million euros. This ERC call awarded a total of 780 million euros to 494 Starting Grants. Only five are coming to Portugal and STEXEU is the only project approved from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.
