By joining IN2PAST, you will be part of a uniquely multicultural, transdisciplinary and co-creative institution: it is the only associate laboratory in Portugal devoted to cultural heritage (tangible and intangible), arts and collective memory; it brings together seven research units, affiliated with five universities; and it operates at the intersection between the ‘two cultures’ of natural sciences, and of social sciences, arts and humanities.
Our team of +300 PhD researchers and more than 300 doctoral students includes chemists, historians, anthropologists, musicologists, biologists, art historians, archaeologists, architects, geographers, geologists, biochemists and designers, among many others.
With a proven track record of scientific, social and international impact, IN2PAST provides an installed laboratory capacity of excellency, in Évora, Lisbon and Minho, and is part of the Portuguese Roadmap for Research Infrastructures, through its connections to E-RIHS – European Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science and ROSSIO Infrastructure.
IN2PAST generates intensive collaborative relationships between academic, laboratory, theoretical and empirical research; public policies in the areas of cultural heritage, arts and civic memory; and an important set of Portuguese and foreign institutions and cultural facilities.
We have a Working Group for Doctoral Training, an annual doctoral school (Boot Camp) and we are associated with 22 doctoral program.
Several IN2PAST PhD candidates with studentships awarded by the FCT are currently developing their doctoral projects in a non-academic environment, at more than a dozen museums and other hosting institutions of a different nature, such as the Santos Rocha Municipal Museum, in Figueira da Foz, or the Arraiolos Tapestry Interpretation Centre, in Alentejo.
IN2PAST is interested in receiving expressions of interest from researchers with different disciplinary backgrounds, which take into account one or more of its five Thematic Lines of research and activity:
