Registration is now open for the the TRANSMAT | IN2PAST 2025 International Conference, ‘Decolonizing Museums and Colonial Collections: Towards a Transdisciplinary Agenda and Methods’, taking place in Figueira da Foz, Portugal, from March 12th to 14th, 2025.
With keynote speakers Meryem Korun (Head of TheMuseumsLab at Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin), Mark Thurner (FLACSO – Ecuador/University of London/University of Florida), David William Aparecido Ribeiro (Paulista Museum, University of São Paulo, Brazil) and Marta Lourenço (Director of the National Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Lisbon – MUHNAC), the conference opens on March 12 at 9 am, with Secretary of State for Culture Maria de Lurdes Craveiro, IN2PAST president of the Board António Candeias, TRANSMAT | IN2PAST PI Elisabete Pereira and Robert Tendai Nyamushosho, from Queens College, City University of New York, Lennon Mhishi, from the Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford, and Marília Xavier Cury, from Museu de Arqueologia e Etnologia, University of São Paulo.
With panelists from South Africa/Angola, Ecuador, Brazil, Uganda, UK, The Netherlands, USA, Peru, Germany, Belgium, Zambia, Italy, Indonesia, Kenya, and Portugal, the TRANSMAT | IN2PAST 2025 International Conference will cover topics such as colonialism and power dynamics, provenance research, restitution/ repatriation/ reparation, collections development and care, decolonization and reinterpretation, representation of hidden and untold stories, representation and identity memory and healing, cultural appropriation and ownership, and Education/awareness.
The TRANSMAT project – full name Transnational materialities (1850-1930): restoring collections and connecting stories (‘Materialidades transnacionais (1850-1930): reconstituir coleções e conectar histórias’) – aims to compile and systematize academic data on the circulation of cultural goods and their cultural, social and political implications. IN2PAST takes part in this project, headed by IHC researchers Elisabete Pereira (PI) and Maria de Fátima Nunes (co-PI).
