‘An Atlantic Drift. The arts of the 20th century based on the Berardo Collection’ offers a comprehensive and unprecedented review of art history in the 20th century and the place of Portuguese art. Over two days, on October 4 and 5, the exhibition will be analysed by artists, guest researchers, and by the curators, in a critical process open to the public, thanks to the visit and workshop series ‘Derivas a partir de uma exposição’ (Driftings from an exhibition).
Organised by MAC/CCB – Museum of Contemporary Art and Architecture Centre, in collaboration with the Institute of Art History, NOVA FCSH and IN2PAST, the initiative comprises two daily theoretical and practical sessions, which are free for IN2PAST researchers who register until September 14, by filling in this form indicating the intended sessions, up to a limit of 15 participants per session. On September 15, CCB will open paid registration for all.
October 4 (Saturday), 10:30 am – 1:00 pm. Visit.
With Nuria Enguita (artistic director at MAC/CCB) Marta Mestre (curator at MAC/CCB) and Mariana Pinto dos Santos (IHA – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST)
In this visit, the tour of the exhibition is led by its curators, who share first-hand accounts of the conceptual process, dialogues with the artists, and the stories behind the works in the exhibit.
October 4 (Saturday), 3 pm – 6 pm. Workshop ‘Driftings from an exhibition’
With Afonso Dias Ramos (IHA – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST), Margarida Moura (IHA – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST), Liliana Coutinho (IHC – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST), Max Ruben Ramos (anthropologist) and Catarina Laranjeiro (IHC – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST). Moderation: Mariana Pinto dos Santos
Participants in this session will approach the themes of the exhibition rooms from their research fields. Each intervention will propose a set of unique relationships, outlining bridges between academic research and curatorial practice.
October 5 (Sunday), 10:30 am – 1:00 pm. Workshop ‘Driftings from an exhibition’
With artist Tomás Cunha Ferreira. Moderation: Marta Mestre
‘vapor_praia’ is a visual research project developed by Tomás Cunha Ferreira on his Instagram account. It works as a hybrid continuous flow archive, between artistic practice and digital curatorship, dedicated to relationships between artists and the beach. This research work will be presented by the artist in the space of the exhibition, with mediation by curator Marta Mestre, who will relate it to works on display, sketching a possible art history permeated by leisure, the beach and hedonism.
October 5 (Sunday), 3 – 6 pm. Workshop ‘Driftings from an exhibition’
With Luís Trindade (IHC – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST), Susana S. Martins (IHA – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST), João Pedro Cachopo (CESEM – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST) and Raquel Ribeiro (IHC – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST). Moderation: Mariana Pinto dos Santos
Participants in this session will approach the themes of the exhibition rooms from their research fields. Each intervention will propose a set of unique relationships, outlining bridges between academic research and curatorial practice.
This session is part of the discussion meeting ‘Passado em Cena’ organised by the Institute of Contemporary History (IHC) and it will use the exhibition as a starting point to consider ways of questioning history when staging the artistic past in a museum space.
