On its 4th Field Trip, IN2PAST returns to its starting point, Évora, the headquarters of our Associate Laboratory. The trip begins on May 23rd at 5 pm, at Sociedade União Eborense ‘Bota Rasa’, which will host the public presentation of the projects developed by the doctoral students who will be concluding Boot Camp 2025, under the banner of common and associative heritage. On May 24th, we will visit the Malagueira neighbourhood, an important place in the history of SAAL (Serviço de Apoio Ambulatório Local – Local Ambulatory Support Service) and which takes us back to the evolution of Portuguese architecture during the years of the April Revolution, and the Cistercian Monastery of São Bento de Cástris, now classified as a national monument and which has been the object of study and heritage safeguarding by various projects at the University of Évora.
During the visit to Malagueira, we will discover the activities of different IN2PAST researchers around SAAL and this Évora neighbourhood, guided by architects Sofia Salema and Pedro Guilherme (CHAIA – UÉvora / IN2PAST). We will also have the opportunity to learn about the work of anthropologist and documentary filmmaker Catarina Alves Costa (CRIA – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST) on this social housing programme, and to talk about the relationship between photography and architecture with researcher and photographer Paulo Catrica (IHC – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST) and architect Vincenzo Riso (Lab2PT – UMinho / IN2PAST). The visit to the Monastery of São Bento de Cástris will be led by António Candeias (HERCULES – UÉvora / IN2PAST).
On this journey between a social housing estate and a convent dating back to the 14th century, we also traverse a cartography of shared (common) institutions. From a neighbourhood founded in the form of public property, in itself a ‘common good’ created by a gift policy between residents’ associations and the municipality of Évora, we move on to the heritage of a religious institution which, similar to the actions of secular brotherhoods, established systems for redistributing food and forms of solidarity and mutual aid in the locality, namely through the cultivation and administration of land whose food resources were shared among the neediest local populations.

IN2PAST covers the cost of travelling to Évora (by public transport, with arrival on May 23rd and departure on May 24th ) and one (1) night’s accommodation in Évora (May 23rd) for its integrated PhD researchers (‘integrados’), PhD students (‘integrados’ or with a doctoral work plan hosted by the respective research unit – RU) and technicians affiliated with the Universities of Minho, NOVA de Lisboa, Coimbra and Iscte who take part in the activities of the two days of the Field Trip.
Booking of travel and accommodation must be requested by each participant from the management team of their respective RU/Management Institution. We will send you a reply to your registration request by May 15th.
