The 2nd International Conference of project ARTHE – Arquivar o Teatro (‘to archive the theatre’): ’Caring and Transferring – Challenges Posed by Performing Arts Archives’ will be held on February 5th, 6th and 7th, 2025, at the National Archives of Torre do Tombo, in Lisbon, with keynote speakers Hélia Marçal (University College London, IHC – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST) and Luís Trindade (IHC – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST).
The three-day meeting, which includes round tables, presentations, talks and visits to an exhibition and an installation, will bring ARTHE to a close and will serve to evaluate the three-year project, led by CET – Centro de Estudos de Teatro, in partnership with IHC / IN2PAST.
On February 5th, at 2:30 pm, Maria João Brilhante (CET) and Ana Bigotte Vieira (IHC – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST), principal investigator (PI) and co-PI of the project, respectively, will moderate the first round table, entitled ‘The role of archives and libraries in the study of theatre and the performing arts: issues of care, access and transmission’. With Silvestre Lacerda (director-general of the National Archives of Torre do Tombo), Pedro Estácio (head of the Library Division of the School of Arts and Humanities at Universidade de Lisboa) and Sofia Patrão (librarian at the National Museum of Theatre and Dance), the goal is to bring in the perspective of the institutional caretakers of archives and libraries.
On February 6, at 2 pm, the second round table will be dedicated to the evaluation of ARTHE, with the presentation of the project’s website and the Guide to Archival Practices in the Performing Arts, and speeches by the project’s partner theater companies.
Keynotes by Hélia Marçal and Luís Trindade will take place on the 5th and 6th at 10 am respectively. The researcher in ethics and heritage, and care practices in museology, from UCL will discuss challenges to the preservation of works in performance proposed in and by performing arts archives, in a lecture entitled ‘Rescuing that thing: between the archive, affection, and the future’. IHC’s director Luís, a researcher in cultural history, will explore hypotheses about the nature and potential of contemporary history archives, and the potential of a certain understanding of archive in the revolutionary process of 1974-75, in a lecture named ‘Visibilities and affections in contemporary history archives’.
The conference is open to anyone who wants to come along and share the results of research into archives or the history to be made from them.
