From roman mine to medieval tower and modern fortification: such was the complex archaeological past of the fortification of As Torres (Tomiño, Galicia, Spain), according to the results of the first excavation campaign carried out at the site in September 2025, as part of the Fortalezas da Fronteira project.
The conclusions will now be presented on 24 January at 8 p.m. at the Unión del Porvenir in Taborda, Galicia, in a talk with contributions from Lab2PT – University of Minho / IN2PAST researcher Rebeca Blanco-Rotea, Xurxo Salgado Tejido (Novos Medios research group, University of Santiago de Compostela – USC) and representatives from the Community of Montes de Taborda.
The campaign was promoted by Lab2PT, UMinho’s Archaeology Unit (UAUM) and USC, with the support of the Regional Department of Culture, Language and Youth of the Regional Government of Galicia, which co-finances the Fortalezas da Fronteira project. Identified by Xurxo Salgado in 2020, the site of As Torres was characterised as a fortification from the War of Restoration period (1640-1668, opposing Portugal and Spain) in 2023.
