‘Research in Images’ exhibition at NOVA FCSH

One picture, many (scientific) commitments

Museology workshop with Kamayurá representatives

12/11/2025

This was the image chosen by IN2PAST for the ‘Research in Images’ exhibition, on NOVA FCSH Research and Innovation Day, November 11. It shows Kanawayuri Marcelo Kamaiurá (left) and Auakamu Kamayurá (right) during a collaborative museology workshop held at the National Museum of Ethnology, in Lisbon, in February 2025, during project InDigit.

The picture was taken by Iria Simões, from the museum’s team. The workshop focused on the collection obtained in 1964-65 by Victor and Françoise Bandeira, while visiting the Ipavu village, fort the then Overseas Ethnology Museum. Marcelo and Auakamu travelled to Lisbon as representatives of the Kamayurá Archive, from the Kamayurá indigenous people (Upper Xingu, Brazil), and InDigit’s co-researchers. One of InDigit’s end goals is to develop a prototype digital repository based on the Kamayurá collection at the museum in collaboration with the Kamayurá people.

We were asked to select an original photograph which represented and symbolised the associate lab’s scientific activity. Among many appropriate choices, this image ticked many boxes, and not only for relating to digital transition, colonial collections or an exploratory project funded by IN2PAST. It also represents main IN2PAST commitments such as with collaborations (with the Kamayurá people), co-research (with non-academics), partnerships (with the museum) or innovation (museology workshop with South American indigenous representatives in an European museum).
