Project 2LEGACY‘s artistic residency, called ‘Recentrar’ (‘To refocus’), will take place in Estremoz, Alentejo, Portugal, from July 8th to the 12th (Tuesday to Saturday), dedicated to the development of pottery projects at beginner and intermediate levels, with the support of potter Francisco Rosado, known as mestre (‘master’) Xico Tarefa (Redondo), and Marta Castelo (VICARTE – NOVA FCT / FBAUL).
With a programme including wheel throwing and coiling, the preparation and application of slip (covering layer for the clay piece), and traditional decorative techniques, hosted by the Centro Interpretativo do Boneco de Estremoz (Estremoz clay figures interpretation centre), the residency focuses on traditional pottery and local raw materials, inviting artists to explore memory, territory, and heritage.
The call for applications is open until June 30, via online form. The clay prepared during the workshop that took place in April will be used and the works produced during the residency will be fired afterwards and included in an exhibition to be held in September.
Candidates will be selected on the basis of their motivation letter, in which they should mention any previous experience in pottery or ceramics, and whether they took part in the 2LEGACY workshop on collecting and preparing clay for ceramics in April. Lunches are not included but accommodation is offered in a shared room at the Centro de Ciência Viva (CCV) of Estremoz. Admission confirmation is also scheduled for June 30th.
This artistic residency is part of the 2LEGACY exploratory project, funded by IN2PAST, in collaboration with the Municipality of Estremoz, local pottery association ADOE (Associação Dinamizadora da Olaria de Estremoz) and Fundação Alentejo, and the support of CCVEstremoz.
Estremoz clay figures have been UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2017.
