‘Challenge yourself with us!’ was one of the mottos chosen by the HERCULES Laboratory – University of Évora / IN2PAST team who helped get NEI’2024 off the ground in Évora. HERCULES was in charge of the local organisation of the European Researchers’ Night 2024, with a programme comprising dozens of face-to-face activities, taking place at Praça 1.º de Maio, between 5 and 10:30 pm, on Friday, September 27th, under the greater them of ‘Science for global challenges (SCIGLO)’.
Chatting with scientists, taking part in hands-on demonstrations or games, attending workshops or themed visits, participating citizens also had the opportunity to witness how Évora sees the HERCULES Laboratory, and vice-versa.
The ‘Évora seen by HERCULES & HERCULES seen by Évora’ initiative, subject to the motto ‘Feel invited and come (re)discover HERCULES!’, aimed at bringing researchers, and the knowledge produced by the research carried out at HERCULES, closer to the Évora’s society.
These activities highlighted HERCULES’s contribution to achieving target 11.4 of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, ‘Strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage’, while reflecting the spirit of the New European Bauhaus, by creating bridges between science, art and culture!’, says Cristina Galacho, HERCULES / IN2PAST researcher.
Some case studies of Évora’s iconic cultural heritage were showcased, such as the Roman Temple, the Água de Prata Aqueduct, the Évora Charter, the Painted Houses (Casas Pintadas), the Arraiolos Tapestry and the Medieval Graves.
At the same time, Guest artists from the University of Évora’s School of Arts presented poetry & music and graphic creation that, in their imagination, represent HERCULES.
