Researcher at the Art History Institute (<a href=\"https:\/\/institutodehistoriadaarte.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IHA<\/a>, in the Portuguese acronym) \u2013 NOVA FCSH \/ IN2PAST, she heads the Almada Negreiros \u2013 Sarah Affonso Study and Documentation Centre <a href=\"https:\/\/almadanegreirossarahaffonso.fcsh.unl.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CEDANSA<\/a> and is in charge of content design and scientific coordination for the <a href=\"https:\/\/muraisalmadagaresmaritimas.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Almada Murals at the Maritime Stations Interpretation Centre<\/a>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/in2past.org\/news\/almada-murals-interpretation-centre-opens-to-the-public\/\">opened to the public<\/a> in April 2025.<\/p><p>\u2018It is very significant that, at Rocha [do Conde d\u2019\u00d3bidos], Almada paints those African <em>varinas<\/em> [women selling fish in the street] and places them at the centre of one of the triptychs. And he does so in a very graphic language, with cubist and post-cubist elements, which is a far cry from the neo-Gothic style that the Estado Novo public commission was accustomed to,\u2019 explains the researcher.<\/p><p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publico.pt\/2025\/12\/24\/culturaipsilon\/noticia\/restauro-murais-almada-negreiros-comecou-varinas-africanas-vai-chegar-nau-catrineta-2159145\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> by Lucinda Canelas (text) and Rui Gaud\u00eancio (photography), featured on the front-page of the December 24 edition, Mariana further emphasises that Almada Negreiros transforms &#8216;a black <em>varina<\/em> into a monument&#8217;, and that &#8216;there is no other work from this period in which the black body is treated with such dignity, nor such protagonism\u2018.<\/p><p>At the Alc\u00e2ntara Maritime Station, where restoration work is now set to begin, Almada\u2019s murals are less obviously subversive but still \u2018confrontational\u2019 and \u2018insubordinate\u2019.
