The technique was used \u2018to identify the presence of possible burials beneath or around the church, by constructing a geophysical model of the subsurface, which can be integrated with the three-dimensional survey of the entire building\u2019, explains principal investigator (PI) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cienciavitae.pt\/portal\/971E-D3D5-260F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fabio Sitzia<\/a> (HERCULES \u2013 University of \u00c9vora \/ IN2PAST).\u00a0<\/p><p>The team in the field proceeded with the work of collecting on-site technical-scientific and historical-architectural data <a href=\"https:\/\/in2past.org\/news\/november-fieldwork-at-sao-joao-de-calvos-from-stone-to-3d-model\/\">started in November<\/a>, towards the project\u2019s end goal of a complete digitalisation of the Romanesque-style rural church based on Heritage \u2013 Building Information Modelling (H-BIM). \u2018Micro-photogrammetry was carried out on portions of the external walls susceptible to weathering\u2019, the PI exemplifies. Further photogrammetric monitoring of pre-existing fractures was performed, \u2018particularly the one affecting the architrave of the west fa\u00e7ade\u2019, Fabio details, in order \u2018to obtain a fissure map useful for future restoration work\u2019.\u00a0<\/p><p>During the first fieldwork campaign, ultrasonic surveys of the church walls were conducted, along with the identification of the quality and provenance of the stone materials used, and the study of stratigraphic units to better understand the construction phases of the church. This time, the researchers continued the identification of building materials and construction phases, used the laser scanning technique LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) to survey the interior of the chancel and the Roman ara reused as the foot of the altar, and collected samples of paintings for laboratory analysis.<\/p><p>This IN2PAST exploratory project, named \u2018The Romanesque-style rural churches of Portugal: An initial stride towards the complete digitalization by Heritage-BIM \u2013 The case study of S. Jo\u00e3o de Calvos (Guimar\u00e3es, 13th Cent.
