returning\u2019 objects, collections or parts of monuments, IHC \u2013 University of \u00c9vora \/ IN2PAST researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cienciavitae.pt\/portal\/3C12-462D-587A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elisabete Pereira<\/a> told <a href=\"https:\/\/comunidadeculturaearte.com\/descolonizar-museus-e-um-processo-em-dialogo-com-os-que-foram-colonizados-sublinha-investigadora-elisabete-pereira\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Portuguese news agency Lusa<\/a> with regard to the <a href=\"https:\/\/in2past.org\/events\/transmat-in2past-2025-international-conference\/\">closing conference of project TRANSMAT \u2013 Transnational Materialities<\/a>, held last week at the Santos Rocha Municipal Museum, in Figueira da Foz, Portugal. Under <a href=\"https:\/\/transmat.uevora.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">project TRANSMAT<\/a>, the museum also hosted the opening of the exhibition \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/in2past.org\/events\/facing-colonial-legacy-in-the-museum\/\">Facing colonial legacy in the Museum\u2019<\/a>.<\/p><p>The main goal of project TRANSMAT \u2013 Transnational Materialities (1850-1930): Restoring Collections and Connecting Stories is the production of new knowledge about the history of colonial collections such as the ones held at project partners National Museum of Archaeology, in Lisbon, and Santos Rocha Museum \u2013 both of which the team headed by Elisabete Pereira was able to document over four years \u2013, but also the complex processes of their construction, and the profiles and trajectories of the agents involved, identifying cultural\/ scientific practices and learning more about objects and their life-paths.<\/p><p>During the \u2018Decolonizing Museums and Colonial Collections: Towards a Transdisciplinary Agenda and Methods\u2019 International Conference, around 70 participants from Angola, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Ecuador, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Peru, The Netherlands, Uganda, UK, USA, Zambia, South Africa, Spain, Tanzania, and Portugal, focused on discussing the complexity of this necessary dialogue process between all agents involved, towards apprehending the multiple meanings over time in the various spaces in which colonial collections circulated, revealing the connections between local and national histories in transnational contexts.<\/p><p>The closing conference of project TRANSMAT was held at the Madalena Biscaia Perdig\u00e3o Auditorium in the Santos Rocha Municipal Museum from March 12th until the 14th, 2025. The exhibition \u2018Facing colonial legacy in the Museum\u2019, an intervention in the 2014 museography of the museum\u2019s Ethnography Room which will be on show until the end of October, opened on Wednesday March 12<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p><p>The installation, designed by architect Miguel Figueira, invites visitors to write their comments on the glass of the display cases that contain part of the museum\u2019s colonial collection, thus \u2018putting transdisciplinary methodologies into action\u2019, says Elisabete Pereira. Conference participants were among the first to pick up a pen and share their views regarding the artefacts, the exhibition, the 2014 museography or the contents of the research project.<\/p><p>\u2018Is this intervention part of the ongoing process of reinventing \u201cthe west\u201d?\u2019, \u2018the first stage of objectification\u2019, \u2018\u201dsmall drum\u201d. don\u2019t have all shown instruments indigenous names?\u2019 or \u2018<em>a olhar para pertences que n\u00e3o nos pertencem<\/em>&#8230;\u2019 (\u2018looking at belongings that don&#8217;t belong to us&#8230;\u2019) are some of the phrases they chose.
