href=\"https:\/\/in2past.org\/exploratory-projects-2legacy\/\">2LEGACY project<\/a>, funded by IN2PAST, went to the Manufacture et Mus\u00e9e Nationaux de S\u00e8vres, in the outskirts of Paris, France, in the beginning of February, to study Charles Lepierre&#8217;s collection of Portuguese ceramics.<\/p><p>This scientific collection was sent to the S\u00e9vres Museum in 1897 by the French chemist based in Portugal, who gathered raw materials and objects showcasing the Portuguese ceramic industry at the request of \u00c9douard Garnier, the museum\u2019s curator.<\/p><p>Project 2LEGACY: \u2018Exploring the role of raw materials in Portuguese ceramic crafts to bring Lepierre\u2019s legacy to the future\u2019 aims to explore the role of endogenous clay in traditional ceramics production, both historically, based on Lepierre\u2019s legacy, and in contemporary practices, with the cities of Estremoz and Barcelos serving \u2018as living labs to explore knowledge-based strategies that will enhance heritage and regenerate craft production.<\/p><p>The research team was welcomed by Christine Vivet-Peclet, curator of the European collection (1800-1945) at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sevresciteceramique.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S\u00e8vres \u2013 Manufacture et Mus\u00e9e Nationaux<\/a> (SMMN), and archivist Lara Cavallo. 2LEGACY\u2019s principal investigator (PI), conservation scientist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cienciavitae.pt\/portal\/C517-AF1C-53AC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mathilda Coutinho<\/a>, co-PI and geologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cienciavitae.pt\/portal\/6613-3DE9-A2C4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patr\u00edcia Moita<\/a>, and conservation scientist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cienciavitae.pt\/portal\/0613-67FF-B407\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catarina Miguel<\/a>, all from HERCULES \u2013 University of \u00c9vora \/ IN2PAST, along with Fernando Castro, materials engineer from the University of Minho, analysed the raw materials and technologies used in Portuguese ceramic production, emphasizing the role of 19th-century endogenous clay, while historian and museologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cienciavitae.pt\/portal\/151F-B182-8D38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isabel Maria Fernandes<\/a> (Lab2PT \u2013 University of Minho \/ IN2PAST) worked on the documentation and inventory of the collection.<\/p><p>Analyses using a portable XRF spectrometer and hyperspectral imaging (HSI) provided valuable insights into the chemical composition and colour palette. Also as part of the mission, Ana Fonseca and In\u00eas Crujo, from the Municipality of Estremoz, studied and photographed the Estremoz ceramic collection.<\/p><p>SMMN, Munic\u00edpio de Estremoz (Alentejo, Portugal) and the Estremoz pottery association ADOE (Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Dinamizadora da Olaria de Estremoz), founded by In\u00eas Crujo, are partner institutions of project 2LEGACY, as is
